“I JUST noticed something strange on Wikipedia. It appears that gradually, over time, editors have begun the process of moving women, one by one, alphabetically, from the “American Novelists” category to the “American Women Novelists” subcategory. So far, female authors whose last names begin with A or B have been most affected, although many others have, too. The intention appears to be to create a list of “American Novelists” on Wikipedia that is made up almost entirely of men. The category lists 3,837 authors, and the first few hundred of them are mainly men. The explanation at the top of the page is that the list of “American Novelists” is too long, and therefore the novelists have to be put in subcategories whenever possible. Too bad there isn’t a subcategory for “American Men Novelists.””

Hey everyone, this is just a quick reminder that I hope not just service dog peeps reblog, because it’s especially important to those who don’t have service dogs. Please please do not distract service dogs. I know it’s sometimes cool to see, and a lot of us are dog lovers, but making eye contact, asking to pet, petting without permission, whistling, talking to the dog, putting your hand down towards the dog, stopping in front of the handler/dog to stare at the dog, all these things qualify as distracting the service dog. they may seem harmless but they AREN’T. you have no idea what that service dog is there for, they are working, and they need to stay focused on their handler. You can accidentally be the cause of the handler being hurt by distracting the service dog.

Case in point: Today I went to Costco with my friend, we both had our service dogs. Many people were stopping us, talking to us, asking us questions, she has a merle Great Dane, so it’s not common. But a quick trip that would take an average person 10 minutes took us about a half hour because we had to keep stopping or asking people not to distract the dogs, or leave the dogs alone. And then we missed someone. A woman saw my service dog, Scarlett who is still in training and started talking to her. Scarlett crossed over me to see this woman which made Scarlett step on my foot, and trip me, I landed HARD on the Costco floor (which is concrete). And this woman only said “oh, she smells my dogs.” and still stood there hoping for a conversation as two dogs and my friend are trying to help me up, which is NOT easy with leg braces (they finally left after glaring at us when my friend told them they can’t talk to service dogs). Finally using the Great Dane I was able to pull myself up and had to use him as a crutch the rest of the way out. My back is hurt, my knee swollen, and I’ll be recovering for a bit especially considering I was already recovering from a hurt back. ALL OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED had she not talked to my service dog.

SO PLEASE remember, if you see a service dog, IGNORE IT. I know it’s cool, I know they are rare and pretty and it’s really amazing and we love dogs, I totally get that, but distracting the service dog can really potentially injure the handler.

Some SDs have patches that say ask to pet, and then you can ask to pet. But otherwise, ignore them.

They are called WORKING dogs for a reason. They are WORKING. They have a job to do. It is a stressful job. Do you know service dogs usually only work 5 to 7 years, because it is so stressful? Yes, they spend two years training a job that will only work for five years. THAT is how intense being a service dog is. They are on the look out for signs of danger for their human, and they are on the lookout for signs of danger FROM their human (illness, injury, distress, etc). They need play time and affection too, and they have days where they do nothing but cuddle with their human partner (they are a human-dog team—service animals are NOT pets)… but when that harness goes on, that is the signal to the dog that they are WORKING. It can be confusing or disorienting to the dog if you try to talk to him or play with him while he is working.

Good stuff to know!

Best feeling in the world: Typing on a keyboard the day after I trim my nails.
Choosing not to be a mother is an important part of me.

This is a tricky one. What did I soak in? What did I absorb? What moved into my pores like liquid into a porous thing?

Well, the sun, sort of. I was in Orlando for a week in April and sat on a deck looking at Lake Superior for a week in July, and I walked around outside in Seattle in August. That said, I wore a large-brimmed hat and a LOT of sunblock most of the time because I burn really easily, and I stayed in the shade because I hate warm weather and feeling sunlight on my skin is basically like being on fire.

I don’t take baths, so there wasn’t that kind of soaking, although I did Plunge this year (in both Minneapolis and Duluth), and I put my feet in Tupperware containers of warm water and epsom salts for a few nights. Does that count? And I spent some time soaking in the sights and sounds of NYC, which was fun, and in depression, which wasn’t.

Ooh, here’s something: I started thinking seriously about how I feel about money and buying things. I’ve come to no conclusions yet, but it’s really affected the way I watch ads on TV and in magazines, and I’m reconsidering my approach to gift-giving.

I recently saw a commercial about a woman driving home in her van, the bottom of which was scraping against the ground and creating sparks, and when she got into her driveway she opened the back to reveal that it was packed with Christmas presents. The point was: Look at all this great stuff this woman bought for her family at low, low prices!

And I thought, Really? Is this something to which I should aspire? Something that we should be teaching kids? Should I really work to introduce so much more stuff into my life? I mean, I value gifts — they’re meaningful and an important part of any relationship — but…isn’t there a better way to do it than throwing money at paraphernalia?

I feel like this is going to become a major theme of 2013 for me. There’s a lot wrapped up in the commodification of one’s life, and it’ll take some effort to unravel it.
